ULYSSES S. GRANT. After President Ulysses S. Grant served twoterms and declined to run for reelection in the 1876 presidential election, Ohio Governor Rutherford B. Their engagements as such—having accepted aninvitation from the Penn Club of Phila for the evening of the 15 of May—that itwill be out of their power.”. Grant declinedto meet with Hayes and instead accepted an invitation to have dinner with themembers of the Penn Club of Philadelphia. Less than a year later, Hayes would attend Grant’s funeral and followhis casket during a seven mile long procession.GRANT REFUSES AN INVITATION TO MEET WITHHAYES AND INSTEAD HAS DINNER WITH MEMBERS OF THE PENN CLUB OF PHILADELPHIA LESSTHAN A YEAR BEFORE HIS DEATHTheletter is one page, measures 8” by 5”, was written on August 4, 1884 (accordingto the postmark on the envelope that originally accompanied the letter), isaccompanied with a photocopy of the original envelope, and is in the finestcondition we have seen a letter from the time period. In addition, the letter has beenauthenticated by and is accompanied with a certificate of authenticity from RRAuction, the leading autograph auction house in the world. We were unable to locate any correspondenceletters from Grant to Hayes making the present letter extremely rare; however, a letter from President Hayes seeking a private meeting with former PresidentGrant sold for $3, 600 at Christie’s in November 2005.
