Illustrated stationery with a large printed photo of Charles Atlas, wearing only leopard skin pattern briefs, with "Holder of the Title: 'World's Most Perfectly Developed Man' " printed below.
A scarce early typed letter signed (TLS) of CHARLES ATLAS, (1892-1972), a bodybuilder best remembered as the developer o...f a bodybuilding method & its associated exercise program which spawned a landmark advertising campaign - (the 98 lb. weakling getting sand kicked in his face, etc.)
Great content, giving advice to Merrill on how to get good results from the exercise program, and recommending that he consult a physician "in regard to your complaint", though he suggests that Merrill wear a supporter "if you find it more comfortable. He even gives advice on improving Merrill's eyes, advising him to bathe them in cold water, stay away from bright lights, and exercise them by "rolling them in all directions".
Includes:
"I am confident if you follow my instructions carefully and faithfully every day you will obtain the best of results and develop a good strong and healthy body which will serve you well throughout a long life.
Put lots of pep and power into your exercises and make up your mind that you will succeed. Try to do about 150 dips a day in groups of 25 and work hard on your course.
Practice each lesson one week. Then take the next one and drop the old one with the exception of lessons 1, 2 and 3. These are to be continued throughout the entire course in addition to each new lesson. Divide your daily exercises so that you practice several in the morning and the remaining exercises at night.
In regard to your complaint I suggest that you consult a reliable physician as it is very difficult for me to advise you through the mail. If you find it more comfortable you may wear a supporter.
For your eyes I suggest that you bathe them in cold water morning and night. Get plenty of rest and sleep and stay away from bright lights. Also exercise them by rolling them in all directions. Write to me, Mr. Merrill and tell me of your progress.
Yours for Health and Strength,
Charles Atlas"
