1910s dark green WELFORD DAIRY FARMERS LONDON swingstopper sterilized milk bottle ideal flower vaseDescription: A rare early tallpint narrow milk bottle made from dark green glass and used in the from 1910s forsterilised (long keeping) milk which was marketed for invalids and infants atthis time. This bottle also has ahand-applied top from the pre-1920 era when glass bottles were semi-hand made. This bottle is embossed on the side with: WELFORD & SONS DAIRYFARMERSLO...NDON This bottle was sealed with a porcelain swing stopper attached to thebottle by a wire bail (not supplied but still widely available – search forflip top stopper and be sure to request a china stopper as some are plasticnowadays). There are no markings on the base or elsewhere to indicate the bottlemaker. This bottle is also ideal for use as a flower vase with added social and historicalinterest! Background NoteWelford & Sons Dairy Farmers where one of the main retail dairies toform United Dairies. Although UnitedDairies was formed in 1917, it was in 1919 that a small number of large retaildairies including Welford & Sons to form United Dairies supplying milk tothe streets of the capital. A fewpioneering dairies were supplying bottled milk at this time when the majorityof deliveries were made by ladling from a churn wheeled through the streets byhand pram. Condition: This bottle is in near excellent condition but thereare single small shallow flakes next to the holes either side of the top thatsupport the wire bail holding the stopper in place when attached to the bottle.There is also a single 1 inch scratch to the right of the embossing.
