Original Description:
A large hand held ‘Night’ telescope, signed on the draw-tube, ‘Watkins, Charing Cross, London. Night’This telescope has been very well kept, completely original, retaining all original lacquer and very clean. The Honduran flame red mahogany barrel is free of any cracks / splits. The single, short draw-tube is fully retractable / unretained and has a Huygenian eye-piece with dust slide cover. The large 2.75″ objective lens is a simple positive meniscus type and is covered with... a detachable lens cap with dust slider.The lenses all damage free and the telescope gives the user an excellent image when viewing.It measures 27.25″ when closed and the barrel has a diameter of 3″.Due to the design, signature, address and over-all structure I would be happy to attribute this particular telescope to Francis Watkins (1), c. 1774 – 178.
