Picture Christmas 1954. A pink trunk is under the tree. Inside it is the most beautiful Madame Alexander bride doll fully equipped with a 1950s wardrobe created by my mother: a skating outfit--a pink, fully-lined coat with a full collar, a circular skirt with a horseshoe for good luck [years later she told me she wanted to sew a poodle, but wasn't sure she could succeed at that], a white sweater, fancy petticoat, funny hat, and ice skates &nb...sp; a cowgirl outfit [think Dale Evans] with felt boots, western hat, belt, and a fringed felt skirt with a holster [I lost the plastic gun long ago.] rolled-up jeans with fabric at the bottom, lace-up white shoes [the precursor of sneakers] and the obligatory plaid shirt her satin and tulle wedding dress, satin panties, veil, original stockings, [and a bouquet and satin slippers that were lost long ago]Today I marvel at my mother's creativity and care in making these clothes--the careful embroidery on the cowgirl hat and the petticoat, the lining on the pink coat, the carefully cut fringe on the cowgirl skirt. She must have spent hours planning this special gift. The only thing she did NOT make, besides the shoes, was the amazing sweater. An older woman across the street made it for my doll when she heard about my mother's wardrobe project.
In addition to that, this doll comes with another dress sewn by my mother in the early 1960s: a dotted swiss white dress with yellow trim. It is just a little too large for this doll, but I begged it from her stash of doll clothes sewn for a Christmas bazaar. I will also include the pink trunk, which is no longer pink--my mom refurbished it in the 1980s and painted it mint green.
About the DOLL herself . . . She was a walker, but something broke and the repair has left her a little off center. I have never had her examined by a doll orthopedic specialist, and I'm pretty sure she can be made to walk straight again. I believe that I replaced her wig at some point; I do not remember for sure. Her body is blemish free--NO gouges, NO burns, NO indentations, NO ink/crayon marks. There is some discoloration at the very top of her arms and her legs where they have rubbed against her trunk. Her blue sleep eyes still open and shut as they did when she was new. The only two negatives about her are her really ugly hair and her off center posture.
ALERT: There is fur on her hat and on the collar of her coat. Considering the time period, it is probably real fur [lambswool?].
My house is smoke-free and pet-free.
