Vintage Lacquer Japanese Heart Box With Colored Scene, Black Interior, Circa 1956. This sweet box was brought back to my grandmother during the occupation of Japan after WWII in the early 50s. There were no trade relations(import/export) whatsoever during this time and therefore, many items sold to GIs who brought them home after their tour of duty. It was forgotten about in the rafters of the basement, and therefore remains in very good condition. The interior looks new from being sto...red for so many years. Crushed stone pigment shines when it catches the light, depicting moss on the hillside. Measures 12x11x2".
The scene is historic and revered by the Japanese, the five storied Chureito Pagoda is to the right of the scene on the mountainside overlooking Fujiyoshida. The pagoda is one of most popular ancient cherry blossom locations where you can get beautiful views of Mount Fuji rising up through the green hills.
The Japanese lacquer surface is a beautiful deep red with a hand painted scene Mount Fuji on the front of the heart, solid black on back and interior. The inside is a bright pink cut pile and is very clean. There are no major issues, but some small abrasions show the silver base in places.
