This listing is for a lovely pair of English serving tongs made by Robert Eley, c. 1795. The tongs have flat elongated ends with engraved design including cartouche on one side for monogram (unused) with the bottom tong having the engraved design on the interior. The tongs have an unusual stained green handle that is made of an unidentified substance heavier than wood. The side without the design bears the English hallmarks for London, Sterling, dat...e code for 1795 and maker's stamp for Robert Eley. On the interior of one tong is another Sterling stamp with maker's stamp. The top of the tongs has a thumb press at the hings with the hinge being tight and the tongs opening and closing correctly.Measures 11 3/4" long and 2 1/4" wide. Weighs 220 grams. These nice serving tongs are in very good to excellent Estate condition with the only noted flaw being a crack down the length of the handle and a couple of faint dings in the paint on the handle. There is one tiny minor dark spot on the interior of the bottom tong that we have not tried to remove.We at Antiques & Moore have been in the antiques business for over 30 years.
