Ltd, in the Ayam-Jantan pattern, circa 1891.Exported from Glasgow to South East Asia, this red transfer pattern shows a flamboyant cockerel in full plumage in the center with a leaf border.Back shows the red factory mark along with the maker stamping mark, pattern name and registration no.174294 One of the... greatest achievements in transfer printing in the last half of the 19thcentury was led by J. & M. P. Bell of Glasgow, Scotland. The firm was established in 1842 by the two brothers: John and Matthew Perston Bell. With theirknowledge of the culture using traditional symbols associated with China, Japan and Indonesia, theyused their oriental-inspired designs on kitchenware, which was already popular in the 18thand 19thcenturies and exported the products to East Asia. The many patterns were mainly produced in rice plates of different sizes.Five colors of print were used: red, blue, green, brown and yellow.
