At the time, this particular unit was commanded by Captain Daniel Russel Fox, who later, as a... Lieutenant Colonel, would be killed at Pearl Harbor onboard the USS Arizona. In WW1, Fox earned the Navy Cross, Distinguished Service Cross, Purple Heart (2) and Silver Star while with the 17th Company, 5th Marine Regiment on duty with the American Expeditionary Force in France. LtCol Fox was the most senior USMC officer to die on the USS Arizona on December 7th 1941 and he was the senior Marine on the staff of Rear Admiral Isaac C. Kidd, the Battleship Division commanding officer. Fox's remains were never found, the Arizona is considered his final resting place.
Also photographed is Sgt Leland Diamond, better and later known as Master Gunnery Sergeant "Lou" Diamond of WW2 fame. He was also dubbed "Mr Marine" and "Mr Leatherneck". At the age of 52, he is best known for taking on a Japanese cruiser with a mortar at Guadalcanal by himself and forcing it to withdraw. Diamond quickly made a name for himself as a Marine's Marine. He was known for walking around without his cover, wearing his dungarees most of the time, his prominent facial hair, and for having a loud and dirty mouth.
Both of the men's names show on muster roles for this unit and I have enlarged both of their photos out of the crowd, provided other photos for comparison, and links to both of the men are below. Photo measures 7-3/4" x 9-3/4".
