The Cortébert watch company was born in 1790, one year after the FrenchRevolution in 1790 the Juillard family that lived in Geneva, obtained a nobletitle from the King of France, even though Geneva was an independent republic.This was one of the last decisions Louie XVI made. In fact soon after hetried to escape from Francehe was caught and imprisoned. this date is very important; The Juillard familyfor the first time was part of the history, and the history of the family isthe history of the Cortebert & Perseo company. The Juillard family was verywell off and they could afford to buy a noble title, the only other thing knownabout them is that they used to trade in fur.
There is no record of what induced the watchmaker Abraham-Louis Juillard in1790 to hang up his sign in the Jura village of Cortebert and startmaking components for watch movements.
In 1803 there was already a watch company owned by the Juillard family in thesmall town of Cortebert, close to Geneva. In 1855, under themanagement of Adam-Louis Juillard, the Cortebert trademark was registered bythe Swiss government, with a symbol incorporating all the arm of the Juillardfamily.Since the first pocket-watch, the company has been manufacturing its ownmovement. Later the production was extended to different calibers to beinstalled on all Cortebert watches. The production was aimed at maximum qualityof the watch, and in a short time the company was able to manufacture watcheswith a low price and a good movement.
At the start of the 1920s, one of Abraham-Louis Juillard’s descendants, aqualified engineer, started meeting the demand for ultra-thin calibers. He alsointroduced movements with safety mainsprings.
Cortebert followed the fashions of that period by adding wristwatches to theproduction of different pocket-watches, movement were also sold to be cased upby etablisseurs.
In 1940, when a luxurious catalog contributed to Cortebert’s 150th anniversarycelebrations, the collection also included wrist-chronographs. In 1944, thefactory was producing 20 different calibers ranging from 5 to 22 lignes.
Among the specialties were large reliable railway watches. Another exclusivitywas the caliber 677 calendar movement made in 1946, which featured additional24-hour indication that can be found in the Cortebert models.In a few years the Cortebert watch company had already won several prizesat the European expositions their watches were sold mainly in Europe, middle east and south America.
In 1878 Cortebert won the silver medal in the Paris exposition. In 1880 the gold medal in Melbourne. In 1896 the silver medal in Geneva. In 1906 the silver medal in Milan and thegold medal in Stockholm in 1913and in 1926 in Barcelona. At this time the Cortebert companystarted to sell more watches in the middle east.
After World War I, Poland, which had just obtained itsindependence and consolidated its national railway, called for tenders tochoose the best pocket-watch to use as official watch of the "PolishRailway Corporation". The watch that was chosen was of course a Cortebertand it has been used up to the beginning of communism. Later other countries, such as Turkey, Serbia and Egypt adopted Cortebert watches astheir official railway watches.This gorgeous, men’s watch is a veryhandsome specimen and features an outer track border, steel hour markers, originalblue steel Spade-stylehands and a recessed sub-seconds “sweep” originalblue steel secondshand. There is signed CORTEBERT at the base of the dial. It is aregistered design model that features a three piece BLACKENING CHROMEDSTEEL case that provides with glass cover of back covering. This watch was converted from pocketwatch. The case, new custom made, fantastic, build specially for this excellent movement. The new Onion-style winding crown is invery good shape and operates properly. The case has MINERAL glass on the front and back side. Many repairs will not be cheap, as most likely they will require replacement of non-standard parts (unlike most late model watches).
- Antique watches should not be beaten or dropped - because repairs may be expensive.
- Antique watches are generally NOT waterproof. This is because waterproofing was not in general production until the middle of the 20th century for most watches. Therefore you should protect your antique watch from exposure to moisture.
- If your watch becomes wet it should be dried off quickly. Carefully open all covers and use a hair drier to blow dry the movement, dial, covers, crown. This will reduce the amount of rust.
- If your watch becomes wet with any kind of salt water you should immediately immerse or spray your watch with fresh (no-salt) water to remove all the salt from the works before drying the watch completely. Any salt left in the watch will combine with moisture in the air to rust metal components of the movement, case etc.
- Winding any mechanical watch tight may break the mainspring. If you can avoid it do not wind the watch hard.
- When adjusting the hands of your watch, move them in a clockwise direction only. Counter-clockwise adjustments may damage the movement.
- If you must adjust counter-clockwise make it for small adjustments only (i.e. for minutes, NOT hours).
- Be careful and gentle when adjusting the movement speed (faster or slower). Don't make sharp movements, and don't touch other components in the movement especially the pendulum mechanism.
- Every 2-3 years it is necessary to service and oil vintage watches.
- If the watch is dirty - allow the watch to run down, don't wind it again until you have it serviced by a qualified watch repair expert. Dust will absorb and remove important lubricants and cause the movement pieces to wear down.
- To clean the case, dial and crystal you should use a cloth that does NOT leave fibers as these may get caught up in the movement. Check with your Watch repair expert to get an appropriate cloth.
- Keep your antiques watch away from magnets. Strong magnetic fields may affect the accuracy of your watch since some vintage watches were made with iron based components in the movement.
- Most Cases and Covers are fine components and will not handle abuse well. The watch should not be shaken, beaten, or stressed.
- Antique watches generally experience an error of up to 5-7 minutes a day. Any accuracy of +- 5 minutes is very good.
