Also carrying the yellow disc, which once would have shown the Gruppe's scottie dog emblem, 3. Staffel laterhad chosen to go their own way and opted for the coat of arms of the city ofBreslau, their home station in 1937. This particular Ju 87B-1 gained its infamyas it crash landed near Selsey, Sussex on the 'hardest day' of the Battle ofBritain (16th August, 1940), after bombing Tangmere. One particular aspect ofthe decoration on this aircraft to note is the red triangle adjacent to theStaffel emblem. This denotes 87-octane fuel.JunkersJu 87 StukaDesignedto function as a close support aircraft, the Ju 87 was first flown on September17th, 1935. The Ju 87 had an innovative design that included automatic divebrakes under each wing-a feature that protected against the consequences ofpilot blackout by ensuring recovery from an attack dive. Crewed by a pilot andrear gunner, the Ju 87 had twin 37mm cannons and a bomb that swung away fromthe propeller on an elongated U-shaped crutch. Its inverted gull wings improvedpilot-to-ground visibility, gave the undercarriage a shorter height and madethe Ju 87 instantly recognizable to its enemies.
