These locks are designed to mount on the side frame of the window. When the thumb turn is moved a compression bar presses against the sash, locking it in place. The genius of this design is that the sash can be locked when closed or in virtually any open position. Great for leav...ing ground floor windows open without sacrificing home security. The other great feature of this design is that no keep is needed, eliminating a piece of hardware from each window.
The compression bars are 1 5/8 inches wide and the length of the thumb turn (banjo shape) is 2 7/16 inches when in the center position. The screw holes are 1 1/4 on center. Both locks are the same model and say "Pat. Apld. For" on the undersides. The locks are steel and cast iron and appear to have been copper plated. The copper plate is almost totally worn off on the tops of the banjo thumb turns.
The banjo thumb turns show cosmetic wear but both locks work as intended. It's great to own the genuine article.
