VERY BEAUTIFUL VINTAGE WATCH 1906
VERY BEAUTIFUL MECHANICAL WORK Discoveryour vintage watch on E-bay alongwith a scarceand RARE example of a men’s 1906 made by American Waltham Watch Company of Waltham, Massachusetts, truly the“grandfather” of U.S. horology. It is a NOBLEDESIGN WATCH that features a WHITEenameled DIAL, AUTHOR’sDESIGN CASE and FULLY 19 JEWELS original pocket watch mechanism with BLUESTEEL SCREWS, GENEVAPATTERN, CIRCLE DAMASKEENING, GOLD WHEELS, FIVE RAISED & SCREWED in GOLDJEWELSETTINGS, BLUE BREGUET BALANCE SPRING & STAR SHAPE MICROMETER REGULATOR with GOLD STAR.”RIVERSIDE VIEW” REAROF THE AMERICAN WALTHAM WATCH COMPANY’S FACTORY  American Waltham- A Brief History American Waltham Watch Company, founded in 1850, wereone of the largest watch makers of the 19th Century. The company was founded on a relationship betweenthree men, in Massachusetts USA.Mr David Davis, a Mr Dension and a Mr Howard.  It was based on a dream that they couldproduce watches that were of good quality, yet were not made from some of themore expensive materials usually found on watches of the era.Mr Howard had originally server as an apprentice to aman called Aaron Willard Junior circa 1829, and a few years later on, in 1842Mr Howard formed a clock and Balance Scale Manufacturing company with Mr Davis.Mr Howard and Mr Dennison then combined there ideas and with some funding, completed there first watch in 1850.But problems were apparent. The company was trying new ideas, things like using Jewels, making dials, and producing steel with a mirrored finish. The problem was as always, that things like this costmoney, and all of it required brand new machinery and thus put the companyunder a great deal of financial stress. The other thing discovered is that although each watch was made in thesame press and made in the same way to the same style, each individual piecehad it's own individual problems and mistakes to be corrected before the timepiece could be classed as complete, and it took months to adjust the watches tothe point that they were better than any other timepieces on the market.During this time Mr Howard had perfected and patentedmany different varieties of automatic watch making machines, that could easilyand efficiently make precision watch components.By 1851, the trio had there own production house, andthe name 'American Horology Company' was adopted. In 1852 the company had renamed themselves and watcheswere being produced with the signature 'The Warran Mfg. Co.' after aRevolutionary War Hero.Watches 1 - 17, the first from the production line, were not placed on the market but were instead given to the company officials, and executives. From then on the company went through a number of namechanges, with watches #18 - 110 being engraved with "Warren Boston", the next 800 were marked "Samuel Curtis" (The Main Financial Backerof the Company) and a few were marked "Fellows and Schel" and weresold for $40.In September 1853 the name was changed yet again to'Boston Watch Company' an d a factory was erected in Waltham, Massachusettsin October 1854. The movements produced at this building are marked #1, 001 to#5, 000 and were marked with the engraving of "Dennison, Howard &Davis, ", "C.T.Parker", and "P.S. Bartlett".Times were hard and the Boston Watch Company failed in1857, and was subsequently sold at Auction to Royal E Robbins. In May 1857, the company was shuffled and became"Appleton, Tracey & Co.", and the watches produced in this timecarried the serial numbers between, 5, 001 and 14, 000 , model 1857. TheC.T.Parker movement was re-introduced as Model 1857 and was sold for $12, 399were made. In 1855 brass watches were being sold for $1.  Also at this time 598 chronometers were made, and by January 1858 the P.S.Bartlet watch was made.In January 1859, the Waltham Improvement Company andAppleton, Tracey & Co. merged to form The American watch Company. As Abraham Lincoln was elected President of the USA, in 1860, and the US was plunged into Civil War, theComp nay Had problems, as over the next year business was at a standstill. Asthere seemed to be no market for watches, bankruptcy seemed inevitable, butexpenditures were cut to the lowest possible level thus keeping the factory inoperation. To this day the Walthamname is synonymous with quality and craftmanship, and remain to this day, verydesirable timpieces. Also an interesting fact is that, according to thebiography by Carl Sandburg, Abraham Lincoln himself carried an American Waltham wrist watch, the 'William Ellory' Model, producedby Waltham, in1863 and was an 18 size, 1859 ¾ plate model with steel balance. This timepiece features an elegant WHITE enameled dial is in good condition. This dial features a 60 minute outer trackborder with blackenamel fiveminute Arabic numerals, blackmain Roman numerals, original blue steel Spade-style hands and a recessed sub-seconds dial with 60second outer chapter and “sweep” original blue steel seconds hand. The dial hasbeen professionally updated, and now is in excellent condition. Signed WALTHAM below the XII. It is aregistered design model that features a three piece CHROMEDSTEEL case that provides with glasscover of back lid. This watch was converted from pocket watch. The case, newcustom made, fantastic, build of THE WANDOLEC ART STUDIO specially for this wonderful movement. The lugs are in great conditionwhile the winding crown is in very good shape and operates properly. Thecase has MINERAL glasses on the front andback side. The case is decorated HIGH QUALITYENGRAVING.  Peeking inside via the glasslid I find the manualwind, high grade, FULLY 19 JEWELS, nickel-finishedmovement with BLUESTEEL SCREWS, GENEVAPATTERN, CIRCLEDAMASKEENING, GOLDWHEELS, FIVE RAISED & SCREWED in GOLD JEWELSETTINGS, BLUEBREGUET BALANCE SPRING & STAR SHAPE MICROMETER REGULATOR with GOLD STAR.
The number of jewels used in watchmovements increased over the last 150 years as jewelling grew less expensiveand watches grew more accurate. The only bearings that really need to bejeweled in a watch are the ones in the going train - the gear train thattransmits force from the mainspring barrel to the balance wheel - since onlythey are constantly under force from the mainspring. The wheels that turn thehands (the motion work) and the calendar wheels are not under load, while theones that wind the mainspring (the keyless work) are used very seldom, so theydo not wear significantly. Friction has the greatest effect in the wheels thatmove the fastest, so they benefit most from jewelling. So the first mechanism tobe jeweled in watches was the balance wheel pivots, followed by the escapement. As more jeweled bearings were added, they were applied to slower moving wheels, and jewelling progressed up the going train toward the barrel. A 17 jewel watch has every bearing fromthe balance wheel to the mainspring barrel jeweled, so it was considered a 'fully jeweled' watch. In quality watches, to minimize positional error, capstoneswere added to the lever and escape wheel bearings, making 21 jewels. The movement is signed A.W.W.Co – WALTHAM, MASS – RIVERSIDE – 19 JEWELS – ADJUSTED – 5 POSITIONS. Also is signed themovement serial number #15.105.021. Thisserial number dates this watch to 1906 asper published production numbers. The movement has 16S size and caliber type RIVERSIDE. This beautiful pocket watchhas the original WALTHAM movement in an excellent status which was very wellsaved, considering age of this watch. Mechanism has been recently serviced toensure it winds and sets smoothly while keeping great, accurate time.Thisis a “NAIL SET” watch so you don’t pull the crown out to setthe time.Instead, you press the little button near the crown IN and then move the crownto set the hands, releasing the button once you’re finished. It’s easy, sodon’t worry about getting the hang of it! It is fitted on a new 24mm blackgenuine leather strap with STAINLESS steel buckle that is vintage style andgoes great with this wonderful watch. Diameter (with crown):      56.00 mmDiameter (without crown): 51.00 mmWatch crystal diameter:    42.50mmThickness:                       15.00 mm This rare watch windsand set smoothly while keeping very good, accurate time. Because of the vintagenature of the watch I cannot guarantee its absolute time keeping accuracy evenif they are in good running condition and in some rare occasions may requireadditional adjustment.Always an EXTRA FINE watches at a no Reserve Price!!!If you like rare, antique, unique and collectible vintage wristwatches or pocket watches (or just enjoy learning about all the different watch makers and models) I suggest you bookmark this page or add me to your "Favorite Sellers" list. I always have beautiful pristine timepieces for sale ending Monday. Now on eBay for 10 Years! Recommendations for the owner of vintage watches: - All Antique watches are mechanical. Many repairs will not be cheap, as most likely they will require replacement of non-standard parts (unlike most late model watches).
 - Antique watches should not be beaten or dropped - because repairs may be expensive.
 - Antique watches are generally NOT waterproof. This is because waterproofing was not in general production until the middle of the 20th century for most watches. Therefore you should protect your antique watch from exposure to moisture.
 - If your watch becomes wet it should be dried off quickly. Carefully open all covers and use a hair drier to blow dry the movement, dial, covers, crown. This will reduce the amount of rust.
 - If your watch becomes wet with any kind of salt water you should immediately immerse or spray your watch with fresh (no-salt) water to remove all the salt from the works before drying the watch completely. Any salt left in the watch will combine with moisture in the air to rust metal components of the movement, case etc.
 - Winding any mechanical watch tight may break the mainspring. If you can avoid it do not wind the watch hard.
 - When adjusting the hands of your watch, move them in a clockwise direction only. Counter-clockwise adjustments may damage the movement.
 - If you must adjust counter-clockwise make it for small adjustments only (i.e. for minutes, NOT hours).
 - Be careful and gentle when adjusting the movement speed (faster or slower). Don't make sharp movements, and don't touch other components in the movement especially the pendulum mechanism.
 - Every 2-3 years it is necessary to service and oil vintage watches.
 - If the watch is dirty - allow the watch to run down, don't wind it again until you have it serviced by a qualified watch repair expert. Dust will absorb and remove important lubricants and cause the movement pieces to wear down.
 - To clean the case, dial and crystal you should use a cloth that does NOT leave fibers as these may get caught up in the movement. Check with your Watch repair expert to get an appropriate cloth.
 - Keep your antiques watch away from magnets. Strong magnetic fields may affect the accuracy of your watch since some vintage watches were made with iron based components in the movement.
 - Most Cases and Covers are fine components and will not handle abuse well. The watch should not be shaken, beaten, or stressed.
 - Antique watches generally experience an error of up to 5-7 minutes a day. Any accuracy of +- 5 minutes is very good.
