1890 FISHER'S ISLAND BRICK MANUFACTURING Co. " F I" ANTIQUE CLAY BRICK, RARE FIND. CRISP LETTERS. VERY HARD TO FIND TODAY. A brick company lost to history. Fisher's Island is on the far eastern end of LONG ISLAND in Suffolk County (there are four counties on Long Island: Kings, Queens, Nassau, and Suffolk). Fisher's Island is part of NY, but a few miles off shore from New London, CT and Westerly, RI. The co...mpany formed in the second half of the 19th Century by Eugene Strickland, and his bricks were of very high quality due to the clay left over from the ICE AGE / receding glaciers. Bricks were a major export from the island. The brick making plant / kilns to fire the bricks was on Fisher's Island but the company offices were in New London, CT. Being close to the coast, barges and rail road cars were used to ship Fisher's Island Bricks all over the northeast, to NY City, Boston, Newport, Fall River, and on and on. With the rapid industrial base expansion and need for factory buildings, bricks were needed in great demand. For example, over 200 million bricks would be needed for the construction of a four story textile mill (no steel) only large fir beams and bricks. These bricks were recovered from demolition sites in Newport RI. The Fisher's Island Brick Mfg. Co was only in business from 1870s to 1903 when it was dissolved. Dewitt Clinton Sage, "SAGE BRICK Co" bought up hundreds of acres on Fisher's Island in 1887 and ramped up brick making with large steam shovels and hundreds of men to make bricks. The Sanford Brick company was also on the island. The Fisher's Island Brick Mgf. Co eventually went out of business in 1903. More information can be found by researching the history of Fisher's Island NY. For SERIOUS COLLECTORS only please. I wish that these bricks be purchased by serious collectors of BRICKS, MASONRY, and TILES. This is a piece of GRITTY AMERICAN BUILDING HISTORY. A real piece of American History that you can hold in your hand. These Fisher's Island Bricks were used in the building of the NY Aqueduct, Islip Hospital, and several major buidling projects in NY City in the 1870-1890s. ( I was told by a local brick mason, that Fisher's Island Bricks are as hard as "hen's teeth" to find and if you find them, hold onto them as they are rare, rare, rare. ) I have never seen a Fisher's Island Brick placed on E BAY and I can find no record of a photo posted.
