Late 18th century linen and silk work sampler by Sarah Kendrick - 1788. This sampler is completely charming with neat stitch work throughout. The upper section of the linen is stitched with the following short verse (a bit tricky to read) which has a floral urn flanked by a small diamond motif on each side
This work in hand my friends may haveWhen I am dead and lead in grave
The middle section of the linen is stitched with a central fruit tree which has a floral motif, fruit bask...et and two birds to the left and right of its foliage and Sarah details on either side of its trunk - Sarah Kendrick Made this in November 5th 1788. The lower section of the linen is stitched with a charming scene of a cottage to the left side with a tree arching over its roof and a fence to the right with a tree behind. There are butterflies hovering to the left of this trees foliage and two trees the right. A squirrel is sitting at the side of the fence with a swan nearby. The top edge of the linen is stitched with a zigzag border whilst the left and right side edges are stitched with a meandering strawberry border.The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age, with some darker areas from where certain shades of the silk have bled, moreso in the lower right quadrant. The sampler is behind glass so I'm not able to see its reverse, but the colours of the silks look good though they are likely to have mellowed to some extent over the years. The sampler is contained within its seemingly original ebonised frame with gilt slip. The frame has a sliver of wood missing on the top right side edge, another on the lower right corner with some smaller losses elsewhere and scratches and scuff marks commensurate with its age. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and shows a later, but still old backing paper with "Worked 5th Nov 1788" written on it.Measures 10 1/2" x 12 1/4" (sight size) and 12 3/4" x 14 1/4" including the frame.
