UNIQUE AND RARE EXAMPLE OF TIMEPIECE
VERY BEAUTIFUL VINTAGE SKELETON WATCH CA 1930’s
VERY BEAUTIFUL MECHANICAL WORK  I am happyto offer for sale this beautiful amazing large skeletonized dress a NOBLEDESIGN WATCH that dates to ca 1930’s and decoratedof the HIGHEST QUALITY URBAN ENGRAVING, thatwas made by the venerable Jaeger-LeCoultre WatchCompany. History: Today, the Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso is one of the most famous watches everproduced, but were you aware that the company got its start producing ebauchesfor other companies? A little known fact about Jaeger-LeCoultre is that inaddition to producing movements for its own watches, the company has alsoproduced movements for famous watch houses such as Vacheron Constantin, Audemars Piguet, and IWC. As a matter of fact, in the early part ofthe 20th Century, Jaeger-LeCoultre even supplied ebauches to the great firm of Patek Philippe. Then as now, Jaeger-LeCoultre wasconsidered one of the finest watchmakers in Switzerland. The year was 1833 whenthirty-year-old Antoine LeCoultre, son of Vallee de Joux watchmaker JacquesLeCoultre, opened a small factory in the town of Le Sentier. Amazingly enough, the currentJaeger-LeCoultre factory is only a few feet away from the site of the originalfactory. In any event, LeCoultre soon proved himself to be a gifted watchmaker, but an even more brilliant inventor. In 1844, LeCoultre revolutionized thewatch industry with the invention of the millionometer, an instrument withwhich measurements of up to one thousandths of a millimeter could be madeaccurately. As a result, precisely finished components could be manufactured, resulting in greatly improved accuracy in timekeeping. Likewise, the metricsystem became the universal measuring standard in watchmaking, while othersystems were rendered obsolete. LeCoultre's motto --"we must base our experience on science" - was particularly true whenit came to manufacturing precision movements and tools. The artistry came laterat the hands of a master watchmaker, who assembled, decorated and regulated themovements. In short order, LeCoultre became the leading supplier of movements, parts and tools to the watchmaking industry in Switzerland. LeCoultre movements were sohighly regarded, in fact, that until 1910, the company provided Patek Philippe with most of its rawmovements. It was only in later years that PatekPhilippe built its own movements from scratch. In the meantime, othercompanies had come to rely exclusively on LeCoultre's products, from which theywould create finished watches. LeCoultre's success was so great that between1900 and 1919, 40, 000 raw movements were produced. Movements sold for between100 and 400 francs each, not an inconsiderable sum of money back then. In 1925, the grandson ofthe firm's founder, David LeCoultre, merged his company with that of EdmondJaeger, the exclusive supplier of watch movements to Cartier. This is whenthe modern company known as Jaeger-LeCoultre first came into existence.Incredibly enough, up to this point, Jaeger-LeCoultre had not sold any watchesunder its own name. The merger, however, prompted further technical innovations, not the least of which was a case made from stainless steel, as well as thecreation of the smallest mechanical movement in the world, which weighed lessthan one gram. The year 1931 saw theintroduction of the Reverso, a wristwatch that could be turned 180 degreeswithin the case, thereby protecting the crystal and dial. It was a fantasticcreation and one that was enthusiastically received by the public.Unfortunately, the worldwide economic crisis and World War II conspired toprevent the Reverso from achieving its full potential. Changing fashions coupledwith the advent of waterproof watches might have forever doomed the watch toobscurity, had it not been for an Italian dealer who visited the factory in the1960's and noticed a number of unused Reverso cases sitting in a watchmakers'drawer. The Italian dealer bought the cases and fitted them with movements. Thefinished watches were an instant sell-out and the rest is history. Today, theReverso is by far Jaeger-LeCoultre's most popular model. Another interesting storyconcerns David LeCoultre's bid for Patek Philippe. In 1932, Patek Philippe wasin major financial straits and looking for a white knight. LeCoultre, whosecompany manufactured movements for Patek, wanted to acquire a majorityinterest. He came close to finalizing a deal, but the Stern brothers, whosecompany supplied the dials used in Patek Philippe watches, ultimately acquiredthe company. Although Patek Philippe has certainly prospered under the Sternfamily's management, it is nonetheless interesting to contemplate what effect aPatek Philippe/Jaeger-LeCoultre merger may have had on the Swiss watchindustry. Needless to say, thecompany has continued to thrive, introducing such innovations as the Memovox, Futurematic, Atmos Clock (which in and of itself could be the subject of anarticle) and strikingly original movements such as the world's thinnestautomatic with a thickness of just 2.35 mm, just to name a few. The thin automaticmovement in particular was an incredible success, as both Vacheron Constantinand Audemars Piguet featured it in wristwatches advertised as being the world'sslimmest self-winding timepieces. During the 1970's and early 1980's, Jaeger-LeCoultre produced a 36 jewel, self-winding calibre for Patek Philippe.Once again, both companies had come full circle. On a final note, it isworth noting that Jaeger-LeCoultre is one of the few companies in Switzerlandthat still produces its own movements, cases, dials, hands, and bracelets.Virtually every single component in a Jaeger-LeCoultre watch is hand-finished, produced in-house, and this in turn results in strict quality control. As aresult, Jaeger-LeCoultre watches are recognized as being among the very finesthand-crafted watches available and evidence of this can be seen in the factthat Jaeger-LeCoultre regularly produces such masterpieces as the ReversoTourbillon and Reverso Minute Repeater. There is also the Master Control seriesof watches, which boast 1, 000 hours of testing and assembly at the patienthands of a master watchmaker. In any event, if you arecontemplating the purchase of a Jaeger-LeCoultre wristwatch, you've made anexcellent choice. It's a highly prestigious and respected brand with a long andwonderful history.Edmond Jaeger 1850-1922: French clockmaker. Earlytwentieth century Design of watches, in particular for Cartier. I always have beautiful pristine timepieces for sale ending Monday. Now on eBay for 10 Years! Recommendations for the owner of vintage watches: - All Antique watches are mechanical. Many repairs will not be cheap, as most likely they will require replacement of non-standard parts (unlike most late model watches).
 - Antique watches should not be beaten or dropped - because repairs may be expensive.
 - Antique watches are generally NOT waterproof. This is because waterproofing was not in general production until the middle of the 20th century for most watches. Therefore you should protect your antique watch from exposure to moisture.
 - If your watch becomes wet it should be dried off quickly. Carefully open all covers and use a hair drier to blow dry the movement, dial, covers, crown. This will reduce the amount of rust.
 - If your watch becomes wet with any kind of salt water you should immediately immerse or spray your watch with fresh (no-salt) water to remove all the salt from the works before drying the watch completely. Any salt left in the watch will combine with moisture in the air to rust metal components of the movement, case etc.
 - Winding any mechanical watch tight may break the mainspring. If you can avoid it do not wind the watch hard.
 - When adjusting the hands of your watch, move them in a clockwise direction only. Counter-clockwise adjustments may damage the movement.
 - If you must adjust counter-clockwise make it for small adjustments only (i.e. for minutes, NOT hours).
 - Be careful and gentle when adjusting the movement speed (faster or slower). Don't make sharp movements, and don't touch other components in the movement especially the pendulum mechanism.
 - Every 2-3 years it is necessary to service and oil vintage watches.
 - If the watch is dirty - allow the watch to run down, don't wind it again until you have it serviced by a qualified watch repair expert. Dust will absorb and remove important lubricants and cause the movement pieces to wear down.
 - To clean the case, dial and crystal you should use a cloth that does NOT leave fibers as these may get caught up in the movement. Check with your Watch repair expert to get an appropriate cloth.
 - Keep your antiques watch away from magnets. Strong magnetic fields may affect the accuracy of your watch since some vintage watches were made with iron based components in the movement.
 - Most Cases and Covers are fine components and will not handle abuse well. The watch should not be shaken, beaten, or stressed.
 - Antique watches generally experience an error of up to 5-7 minutes a day. Any accuracy of +- 5 minutes is very good.
