HISTORIC 19th Century Letters NE US Hatteras, Sayville, Long Island, Weather BIN
Item History & Price
Interesting historic archive of 18 letters/receipts of a seagoing captain hauling freight on schooners on the East Coast. The letters show he was based in Sayville, Long Island, New York and he would travel up and down the coast hauling freight like lumber and coal. The po...rts he hauled from included Hartford, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Hatteras. Letters are dated between 1871-1882 and some have envelopes with stamps or postmarks. There is one 1866 National Guard Notice for a parade and rifle practice on December 25th.
There are reference to schooners including Brig Ella, Bedell, E.H. Williams, Allie Belden. Interesting content in the letters refer to "Ship Rack (Wreck)", coal and lumber freight, ship dividends/shares and payments, weather conditions, and other matters.
The letters came in an antique Lozenge box with the name of the captain handwritten on the top of the box. It will be included with this lot. I am sure the researcher, maritime historian, library will be interested in this collection.
Here are some excerpts (some of the script was hard to read and I put question marks where it was difficult to decipher the words)
