Album a bit battered but was originally of superb quality. It is in reasonable condition but original leather spine cloth and backing is now missing. A temporary repair has been made which holds the covers together but the main body of the scrapbook needs to be glued to a more permanent strong spine cloth. I have not attempted to undertake the repair as I prefer where possible to leave albums... in their original condition - the album does however feel fragile and care has to be taken when leafing through it. If I was keeping the album I would therefore complete some sort of repair to the spine in order to add support to the covers which are relatively heavy.
The binding is very solid with no loose pages and no pages have been removed.
The covers are made of extremely high quality materials (wood and leather). The front cover bears the initials J.H.B and side two of the first page has a elaborate monogram (image 2).
The pages are made of thick card and have gold edges and each side has fine borders. Everything about the album suggests that it must have belonged to a member of a very affluent family. A number of pages have some damage to the outer edges (mainly corners knocked off) but in general they are in sound condition. There is some minor foxing. The album has twenty-six pages and all fifty-two sides have been used.
The album measures 30cm x 23cm x 5cm and weighs 2.25 Kg.
The content is made up mainly of scraps and greetings cards. There are about five hundred chromo scraps and they are for the most part of real quality. Many are relatively early and some are unusual. Very few are damaged. They cover numerous subjects and great care has been taken in setting them out.
The greetings cards are less interesting although some are quite good.
The photographs are not that good due to awkward light conditions but they do at least give an indication of the quality of the scraps.
A nice album.
