It is 1893 and the "Gay Ninety's" reigns and Grover Clev...eland has been elected the U.S. president. The U.S. is at relative peace internationally, conquering only Hawaii. The 1893 World's Fair (Columbian Exposition) opens in Chicago, introducing the first U.S. commemorative stamps and a commemorative half-dollar. The NYSE crashes causing the Panic of 1893 and depression. Paris introduces the first car (license) plate and "Pepsi" is formulated by a pharmacist. New Zealand is the first country to allow women the vote while Colorado is our first state to do so in the same year.
Rudolf Diesel patents his engine and the U.S. launches its battleship "Indiana." Cultured pearls are introduced as is the recumbent bicycle. The brothers Duryea drive the first gas-powered motor-car in Springfield, MA, while more settlers rush to the Cherokee Strip in Oklahoma. Lizzy Borden is acquitted in Massachusetts and the British Flagship HMS "Victoria" collides with HMS "Camperdown" and sinks. Thomas Edison's kinetoscope is demonstrated in Brooklyn and the first recorded basketball game takes place in Beaver Falls, PA. The American University in Washington D.C. begins. The Salt Lake Temple dedication takes place, after 40 years of construction. And lastly, the Supreme Court declares the tomato a vegetable!

Harper's Weekly, A Journal of Civilization was an American political magazine based in New York City. Published by Harper & Brothers from 1857 until 1916, it featured foreign and domestic news, fiction, essays on many subjects, and humor, alongside illustrations. It carried extensive coverage of the American Civil War, including many illustrations of events from the war. During its most influential period, it was the forum of the political cartoonist Thomas Nast.
