Original Description:
INCREDIBLE 345 lb. HAY BUDDEN BLACKSMITH ANVIL "BEST AMERICAN MADE".Beautiful beast of a budden - 345 pounds, serial number is 191642 meaning 1912 production year.Beginning in 1907 Hay Budden began to shift their production to a 2 piece design rather than 3 piece. This is seen as a large improvement because the entire top half of the anvil is solid high quality steel rather than the previous forge welded plate on the face. By 1909 the entire production of anvils was shifted to this two... piece design. Hay Buddens are considered the best. And these post 1909 Hay Buddens are consider the best of the best. This anvil was found with a weld bead running across the heel. It does not appear to be a repair because there is no crack under the weld or on the sides where the weld ends. My guess is the anvil was abused by someone who wanted to practice a weld. This cosmetic damage could be removed so that the weld was never visible after some patina redeveloped, by having a professional grind the old weld. Re-weld using the Rob Gunther method, then grind flush - or it could be left alone. It’s perfectly useable as is and the rest of the face is in exceptional shape. The side with the makers mark was used for proofing what appears to be chisels, hence the many dented lines. This was a common practice for tool makers to test hardness or work harden their metals.
