Vintage Moore & Wright 7 Drawer Engineers Cabinet Toolbox Chest Box, Keys VGC
Item History & Price
This is a lovely early box. From the M&W catalogue of 1946 it is described as follows with a catalogue number of 1007;"These cases are robustly constructed of 5/8" hardwood with Yale locks and leather carrying handles which lie flat when not in use. They are beautifully finished in a mid oak colour and polished, with oxidised metal corners.
Th...e drawers are extremely well fitted and lined with green baize, and the leather handles and knobs are securely fastened by nuts and bolts. The detachable fronts are designed for use as sketch boards".
I believe that this is an early box. It has the M&W logo on the largest drawer which is normal, however it also has the full Moore & Wright transfer on the rear of the box. This box has clear and visible matching grain across many of the drawer fronts. All the drawers have their baize present, there is engineering markings on most of them,
The only fault that I can find relates to the bottom drawer. The runners for the bottom drawer are missing the last 1" or so. This is often caused by the heavy bottom drawer putting pressure on the ends of the runners when it is pulled out. The previous owner has used two loose batons as additional supports (see photo 8), however the runners remain able to support the drawer unaided.
The bottom drawers of these cabinets are often used to store the heaviest items, blocks, parallels etc resulting in the bases bowing and pulling out of their rebates. This is minimally the case with this box. There is a 1/32" bowing visible (see photo 12). All the drawers are perfectly firm with no damage to them. All the original knobs and corner caps are fitted. The condition of the frame itself is also very good, the lock works well with two keys.In summary then, I believe this is a box in overall exceptional condition for its age and the fact that it has been used as an engineers box.
