Once again, we at John Stanley Antique Tools are pleased to present to you another unique Maine axe. Marked - L.L. BEAN INC. / FREEPORT, ME. this has a nice deep mark that can be read across the room. As shown, this is an unusual head pattern. Of all the axes we have sold over the years, we have only had two of this style and they were SPILLER axes made in Oakland, Maine. It is quite probable that this axe was made by Spiller for L.L. Bean. Very nice used condit...ion, the head is stamped with a previous owners initials - JCP as well as the original handle being marked - JP. Measures 24" long. The head is 5 5/16" long with a 4 1/4" wide cutting edge. The underside of the head is stamped '2' for the weight of 2 lbs. The end of the original handle still has remnants of the original L.L. Bean decal. The total weight with handle is 2 lbs. 11 oz. Any L.L. Bean hatchets you see listed are all of the Hudson Bay style. If you are a discriminating collector or someone that wants to set yourself apart from what the rest of the pack has in their collection then this is for you.
