Erte (1892 – 1990, Russian/French) “Ibis (with Bird’s Head)” (1980)– Rare limited edition patinated bronze sculpture, cast from a model using thelost wax process, set upon a two-tiered bronze platform base incised with theengraved signature of the artist “Erte” and stamped with edition number ‘82/250’, JM symbol [of the Joel Meisner Foundry], ‘RKP INT. CORP. ©’ [Publisher] and ‘1980’. Measures 17 x 12 x 7 inches. AnArt Deco...-style figure of a woman’s body with a bird head, wearing a feathereddress with finely detailed feathered wings at the shoulders. The very rare “Ibis (Bird Head), ” is the predecessorto the casting of the second “Ibis” in which the bird was replaced with anelegant woman’s head. Erte had not been satisfiedwith the bird head, so he changed it and the piece was later re-released. The dress was inspired by a costume design froma 1941 production. Erte began in the ArtDeco movement in his younger years, and after revisiting the concept as anelderly man, it was reborn, resulting in the extensive series of bronzesculptures.
