For sale is this very rare Munson Lightning Rod Co. rod. This is known as a Munson spiral flange rod. First patent on this was in 1856 to David Munson. It was for a flanged spiral tube. This rod is like that but it also has a 3/8" round iron rod inside. I saw a catalog once that showed this exact rod I have listed. I...t was an 1880's catalog. I figure the steel core was added for stability later in years. There is no lock seam on the copper wrap so it isn't water tight. Not a very good design, hence it's being so rare today. When I found this the owner had this rod plus a second piece. This rod had no tip but the other piece did. Both came from same location in Central Indiana. I took the tip off the partial rod and put it on this rod.Rod is 5 ft. tall. Rod is made of one piece of copper sheet formed with 2 flanges. This spiraled into a hollow tube. Inside the tube is a 3/8" rod iron rod. No lock seam on copper resulting in some separation near the bottom. Foot on rod is partially missing. Tip slips on and off. Stand is 3 ft. tall. Has pinch type fasteners. Feet are a single loop. This is an early style of foot. Most unusual rod indeed and this is guaranteed old antique not something home made. This is the only complete one of these I've seen or even know of in 30+ yrs. of collecting.If you want, you can pick this up locally or we can meet if you're not too far away for the cost of gas.
