Antique Native American Pottery From Gallup New Mexico Circa 1914 (Hopi)?. Condition is Used. Shipped with USPS Priority Mail. Lets start with condition, there are no cracks, breaks, chips, or repairs of any sort or kind. There are 4 slip pops unknown if they happened during firing. Most obvious is on bottom and next is on one of the rim points. Other 2 are on side. Dark color towards top is from firing. I think the last 105 years have treated it very well. This pot or olla was collect...ed by my Grandparents who homesteaded in New Mexico with the land act there. My grandfather did some work on the rail line with fresnos and mules. Passed on to parents then to me covering the time since 1914. Gallup was first the headquarters of paymaster David Gallup of the Atlantic & Pacific Railroad. Rail workers referred to collecting their pay as going to Gallup. The name stuck and when railhead and town were built it was named after him. Gallup is also on the famous route 66, but it wasn't really a traveled road until 1926, that's 12 years after date on pot. Can't help but wonder if this olla isn't what is known as a ralroad jar or pot? Sellers would line train stop to sell their wares thru the windows while train took on water and passengers. Very early tourist market. Pot is 3 3/4" tall, mouth is 3" wide, olla is 4" wide at shoulder, and 1 3/4" at base. As for pattern I believe the feathers all going in same direction are a migration pattern. I think straight straight lines are for water? Don't know about checkerboard design. Enjoy looking, thank you.
