History: The CCC was intended to put unemployed young men to work doing forestry, logging, bridge building, infrastructure improvements, state and national parks, stadiums (my high school's stone football stadium was a beautiful product of the Depression's CCC). The men were formed in companies, usually reserve Army Engineer Officers oversaw the companies. There were uniforms and rank. The men earned $30 a month working 6 days a week, most of which was sent home to support families. As War broke out in Europe the CCC shifted towards defense preparation projects. By mid 1942 with the US at War and the draft in full swing the CCC was shut down. However, many CCC Camps were converted to Army Camps as well as detention camps for Japanese, Germans and Italians determined to be "enemy aliens". Service in the CCC often lead to immediate promotion to corporal and sergeant when the CCC veterans entered the Army early in the War.
