My dear little wife!
Finally I have time to write again. Today I feel better again and it seems that I have overcome my bad cold. My back is feeling better too. Today we got some new recruits, lots of young vegetables and the youngest is a 17 year old volunteer who really wants to experience something. Our Chief has said that we should take him tomorrow with the Partisan hunt and if we come across partisans he may deliver the first shot. I then suggested that this boy could also string one up. Let's see how long it takes until he vomits! 17 years old is this buster ! Me with my age 26 belong to the old iron! I have not had much of my life yet. School, apprenticeship, RAD and then as a volunteer to the Wehrmacht. Then campaign against France and Russia, then wounding, military hospital and now at the Feldgendamerie in Italy. Who knows what else is coming and where fate leads me? It is time for this war to end. Too much blood was shed and half of Europe was destroyed. In my early days in Russia, I still thought that the war against the Bolshevists was quickly over, but I was wrong. This country is too big and hard to conquer. If we killed 50, 000 Russians, 80, 000 new ones appeared elsewhere. Now the whole world is against us and we always have to fight on new fronts. We all hope that the Fuhrer (Hitler) will give us the final victory with the new weapon. This weapon should be huge and automatically fly without pilots. Oh, that would be nice if we could wipe out Bolshevism and the Jews. Then we and our next generations would have eternal peace. Well, how are you and our little daughter doing? I hope the best as always. For 2 days I have not received any mail from you, but I think you are fine. The trains are always attacked and I hope not that it was the train that transported your letters. For today I conclude with many greetings and kisses. Slowly my writing paper is running out, maybe you can send me something like that. So my dear, all the best! Your dad, your Hans
