Rare WW1 Royal Dublin Fusiliers 9 Batt Trench Cap

This is a rare survivor , a unit marked early war soft woollen trench cap issued to the 9 th battalion Royal Dublin Fusiliers and stamped to that effect in the crown lining.The cap has seen plenty of service but has been stored well and apart from the "musty" smell of an attic or garage it has no damage other than a field repair where the top of the scarce economy issue badge has worn through the material and been stitched inside.The lining has been a golden colour and the crown shows ...the remains of a "spray on" waterproofing which looks a bit like the remains of salt in sweat , slightly sparkling.The unit stamp is in black and there has possibly been a date or makers stamp.As mentioned , the badge is the scarce brass economy issue, showing signs of verdigris, as do the buttons.The cap had obviously lain flat for many decades and it collapses on itself naturally with the front peak touching the back.When opened up it produces the classic long peaked shape.The material is of a thick woollen type and was probably locally sourced to allow rapid issue to the unit during early winter war years.A rare survivor to a good fighting Irish unit , worthy of museum display .
