Grapefruit Moon Gallery has recently acquired an interesting collection of photographs that were created for use in advertising the Swim Easy brand of swimsuits. Branded by the Myers Manufacturing Company, Inc. of Poughkeepsie, New York, these trademarked bathing suits were advertised heavily in newspapers throughout the early 20th century. The one-piece suits boasted a variety of novel and stylish models and they even photographed some of Hollywood's aspiring starlets in their fashions. This is a wonderful collection of old photographs that capture the style and newfound freedom of women's swimsuits.
ITEM: This is a 1927 vintage and original photograph of six bathing beauty showgirl flappers posed in matching Swim-Easy swimsuits. Identified as Margaret Shawl, Mildred Frizell, Florence Pearlson, Ethel Pearlson, Annette Atherton, and Lolly Zera, these swimming sirens no doubt entertained audiences while on tour with Fanchon & Marco's "Spring Idea" presentation. Fanchon and Marco's "Ideas" were elaborate live stage shows put on across the nation in movie palaces prior to the feature film. The "Idea" productions included elaborate staging, vaudeville acts, and performances all related to a single theme or concept. These would also include glamorous female dancing troupes.
These sleek Swim-Easy suits gave a snugger fit and shorter hemlines affording women more freedom at beaches and pools while also offering up more skin to get that bronzed California look. A really cool piece of old fashion advertising that definitely gets us in the mood for the summer!
