Check out this shining slug from the Sierra Nevada Mtns. Lovely explosions of gold ignite the entire rock emphasizing it's richness. The Au is naturally-occurring. This slug will defin...itely make your metal detector zing. I suspect it was extracted from California's Sixteen to One Mine. I say 'suspect' because it did not come directly from the mine, but it does possess gold and matrix characteristics not unlike other specimens that most certainly did come from the 16 to 1.
Back when placer-mining was my full time vocation, the dream was some day to find a desert wash full of specimen-grade rocks like this. Only occasionally did I detect, dry-wash, or dredge up specimens containing quartz, calcite, or other carbonaceous gangue or matrix. What I do now is acquire gold specimens through the minerals and mining community and pass them on to collectors. This manner of collecting is easier though not nearly as much fun. All my specimens show visible gold and are authentic gold nuggets or gold quartz specimens.

I poured through old mining dumps for years looking at orange-yellow-rusty rock through a loupe, but I never found a piece with visible gold.  Hydrothermal solutions carrying gold and silica crystallized into veins of gold quartz. This specimen comes from one of the many vein systems sourcing the immense placer deposits of the Sierra Nevada Mtns, the famed Mother Lode.    Weight Conversions: 15.43 GRAINS = 1 GRAM31.103 GRAMS = 1 TROY OUNCE24 GRAINS = 1 PENNYWEIGHT (DWT) 20 DWT = 1 TROY OUNCE480 GRAINS = 1 TROY OUNCE S&H

BORN A GOLD MINER
As a lad, my dreams stirred and mystified me with the recurring labor of digging for gold in my neighbor's back yard. I can only speculate on what mysterious force caused me to imagine myself mining for gold at such a tender age. The irony is me growing up in coal country where few ever experience mining for precious metals. Throughout our family's history, no one I was aware of had participated in Gold Rushes. That doesn't necessarily mean they hadn't. Locals knew about seams of black, combustible carbon running beneath the ground. It's also known as 'coal'. This interest in my own pale lure defies logical explanation, but whatever the source for such strange visitations, I was drawn to the magical, mysterious yellow metal, gold, and would not know until years later all the adventures my vocation from the future would lead me to. After a stint in the military, I relocated out west there to become a gold prospector. I got to know the lay of the land, learned to go where the gold was, and, for twenty years,  followed the Trail of the Argonauts. As an itinerant placer miner,  my tools were an old Ford van,  topographic maps,  pick-axe, shovel, pry bar, rocker box, buckets,  sluice, gold pans, quicksilver,  drywashers, suction dredges,  metal detectors, and, most of all, my trusty Estwing rock-hammer. I found myself making treks into the hills and desert-lands of the western U.S. and Canada. How did I fare? Well,  lets just say most of us who try it do well to scrape out a living. Don't forget, gold was worth about 1/4 what it is today; but don't let anyone kid you. In any day and age, no matter how valuable it is, there's no such thing as an easy ounce of gold. Digging for gold, if you're a digger, is hard work not intended for the frail of frame. In terms of production, what was recovered during my active mining years is almost all gone. Hanging onto finds was never a luxury I could afford. Now, with no direct descendants of my own, I have only my songs and memories from the goldfields to pass along. yours truly, Eldorado Gene  LAW OF THE YUKON"From my ruthless throne, I have ruled alone for a million years and a day; Hugging my mighty treasure,
waiting for man to come; Till he swept like a turbid torrent, and after him swept - the scum". Words of Robert ServiceThanks for checking out our digs. Gold of Eldorado  8-13-17
