History: Purchased in Erfoud by Pierre-Marie Pelé.
Physical characteristics: Dark stone, partially covered with fusion crust. Cut surface reveals dark interior with small chondrules.
Petrography: Highly recrystallized chondrite with average size plagioclase below 50 μm. Abundant sulfide. Accessory magnetit...e.
Geochemistry: Olivine Fa39.6±0.4, range Fa39.1-40.1, Cr2O3 in ferroan olivine is 0.0±0.1 wt%, NiO2=0.22±0.20 wt% (n=3). High-Ca pyroxene Fs29.6Wo68.7 (n=1). Chromite Cr#=0.85 (n=1).
Classification: Rumuruti chondrite (R5).
R chondrite: The Rumuruti (R) group of chondrites does not clearly belong to any of the major classes of chondrites (ordinary, carbonaceous, enstatite); R chondrites have sub-solar Mg/Si and refractory/Si ratios, oxygen isotope compositions that plot above the terrestrial fractionation line and ordinary chondrites, and highly oxidized mineralogy.
type 5: Designates chondrites that have been metamorphosed under conditions sufficient to homogenize olivine and pyroxene, convert all low-Ca pyroxene to orthopyroxene, cause the growth of various secondary minerals, and blur chondrule outlines.
The meteorite is sold in a box and with a separate label / signed certificate of authenticity.
