Bold anti-slavery statement with a central image of Jesus Christ breaking the bonds of a Slave that kneels to his left and casting out the ...white Slave-holder at his right.

At the right is a scene with a family of Free Blacks gathered in front of their home to watch a massive crowd celebrate before the Triumphal Arch of "Emancipation".
The Liberator was a major, weekly abolitionist newspaper which was a voice of the Radical Wing of the Anti-Slavery movement. On January 1, 1831 prominent Abolitionist William Lloyd Garrison published the first issue of "The Liberator".
His words (printed in that first issue), "I am in earnest — I will not equivocate — I will not excuse — I will not retreat a single inch —
AND I WILL BE HEARD, " stated the position of the new Abolitionists.
Garrison preached the doctrine of "no compromise with slave holders" and demand "unconditional and immediate emancipation". Approximately seventy-five percent of the readers were free African-Americans.
This rare, original issue of the "The Liberator" is dated Friday March 4, 1848.
