Original Description:

Species: Fluorite var. Chlorophane, MicroclineLocality: Globe pegmatite, Petaca District, Rio Arriba Co., New MexicoSize: Large Cabinet - 10.5 x 7.7 x 6.3 cmWeight: 479 gNumber: 1220Details: Chlorophane is a fascinating variety of fluorite, the mineral that gave us fluorescence. Mostly found in pegmatites where rare earths and uranium minerals occur, chlorophane shows luminescence taken to extremes. This big chunk is the largest piece I have, and is ...about 90% chlorophane, with a little cream-colored microcline feldspar. It glows under all UV wavelengths - indigo blue (LW) to yellow (SW) - and shows long-lasting green phosphorescence after the light is turned off. It also gives off a beautiful bluish green light - similar to the phosphorescent color - when heated (thermoluminescence), and even emits light when scratched or broken (triboluminescence). Note: item includes a set of smaller chlorophane pieces for thermoluminescence and/or triboluminescence demonstrations, plus an instruction sheet.
NOTES ON ULTRAVIOLET:The higher quality the UV source, the better fluorescent minerals look. Key factors include lamp wattage,  UV spectrum and filtration, as well as distance from lamp to specimen. For best results with any UV source, observe against a dark, non-fluorescent, non-reflective background, in complete darkness with eyes adapted. To observe phosphorescence, "pump up" the specimen with close-range shortwave UV for 15-30 seconds or longer, then in one quick motion, turn off the lamp and move it away. The photos here are taken using UV Systems SuperBright II (shortwave, midwave, longwave-351), Convoy/Nichia (longwave-365) and Philips BLB (longwave-368) lamps, metered and exposed to show fluorescent response to best advantage.
