Ah, I wish Charatan was still making pipes! Their carvers made WONDERFUL looking and WONDERFUL smoking ' Free-Hand' pipes back during the heyday of the Charatan era (before the 1940s to 1980s). Their quality, attention to detail and smokability is proven in that they are one of just a few makers that has retained it's value these many years later. I should now, I owned and cherished over 50 Charatans. I was blessed to be asked to be one of the early m...embers of The I.C.C.S., The International Charatan Collector's Society. This BEAUTIFUL piece was bought at the Charatan 'meeting' at the Chicago Show many years. I paid dearly for it because as you can see this is a "Supreme" grade and stamped 'FH' as well. Screw the Danish...Oops. And Dunhill. They both wish they could make a pipe like this piece represents. Look at the STRAIGHT Grain on this BEAUTY. I have said this before MANY times here on Ebay but I hope the pictures do this wonderful pipe justice. This piece is NOT a "Dunhill factory Charatan" from the 1980s or 1990s. This pipe was made sometime before 1954 due to the right side of the shank is 'blank'. The next stamp was 'Made By Hand' in BLOCK LETTERS, representing 1955 to 1960 0r 19655. There are no scratches (excuse the occasional cat hair on one of the pictures), shop wear, rim char or significant bit marks anywhere. It is in EXCELLENT condition. It looks almost brand new! The nomenclature on the shank is FAINT but readible. Was it made on a Friday night when the Masters back then in the factory had the "Pub" on their mind and/or did the previous owner have it buffed. It doesn't matter. VERY READABLE. The original stem is a little buffed as well but..I'm being 'picky'....Why am I selling it? I need money for the Vegas Show coming up soon. Its overall length is 6 7/8 in., bowl height 1 15/16 in. tall and rim diameter is 1 1/4 in. wide, making it about a longer length Dunhill group 5 in size. I am a fool to get rid of it but I want what it is worth, what this specimen represents concerning classic English Briar history. ...Long live the original Charatan 'Freehands'!
