This is an Estate Fresh old W H HOWELL CO Antique SAD IRON No 3 made in Geneva IL. These sad Irons were one of the earlier creation evolutions of making Irons. The Sad Iron was put in or by the fire or on an old stove and heated. There was no or not much electricity in home back then. Most irons you used, reheated, used reheated etc... With this gems , When hot, one used the detachable handle to lift it from the hot area and Iron with it. ... These original came in sets of 3 but one can never find a complete set any more unless like in an Ebay format or the old way of chasing antique shows or hunting yd sales. The reason 3 is they cooled faster than they heated so when the one u were using cooled too much, , unclip it back on the heat source and clip on the next one. It was an ingenious creation. Earlier ones you actually had to scoop the coals INSIDE it and then ironed while they were hot... many burns in those days. Ahhh how far we have come. Its Condition is Used and as is as you see it in my photos.

They primarily made "cast-iron sad irons" much shaped like the electric irons of today.
