UP FOR AUCTION:
Antique circa 1817 Thomas ROWLANDSON Color Art Print of Dr Syntax at Covent Garden Theatre
This is a hand-coloured print from an 1817 book. The artwork measures about 7 inches by 5 inches, and the overall matted size is 12 inches by 9 inches.
The print originates from: William Combe's "The Tour[s] of Doctor Syntax, In Se...arch of the Picturesque; In Search of Consolation; In Search of a Wife". This was published by Rudolph Ackermann in London in about 1817, and the illustrations were by Thomas Rowlandson. Dr. Syntax is the figure at front-lower-right of the lean schoolmaster in a wig and black suit, with the long nose and chin.
Thomas Rowlandson (1756-1827) was a British artist/illustrator and caricaturist of the Georgian Era, noted for his political satire and social observation. Rowlandson was largely employed by R. Ackermann, the art publisher, who issued a series of art plates with Rowlandson's Dr. Syntax character, captioned with verses by Dr. William Combe.
I found another copy of this engraving on-line, which has the following words at the top-center of the perimeter-border above the artwork: "London, Published Feb. 1st 1817, at R. Ackermann's Repository of Arts, 101, Strand". This particular print for sale appears to have been whited-out at that location, with those same words barely visible. ( I believe a framer whited it out to place the primary focus upon the artwork itself.
The print is an antique, 1817 print from a book. It is Plate Number 26 (shown at top-right border). It was drawn and etched by Rowlandson (stated at lower left border). It was hand-coloured very beautifully, but it does not say who did the colouring.
The artwork shows a play in progress at a large theatre. The audience is very crowded with many interesting individuals.
AUCTION IS FOR THE MATTED, 12 x 9 inch ARTWORK
Excellent Condition: The print is very clean and sharp, with bright colors, and with no signs of wear. It looks like a former framer has white-outed its book-reference on the top of the perimeter-border. It is matted on a nice, old crimson cardboard matte.
PLEASE NOTE: I will carefully package and ship this 12x9" matted engraving by USPS Post Office to the winning buyer.
