This old wall or building sign was just purchased, at auction, from the estate of Herman Galberd, WWII vet and Columbia University employee from 1956-1994. It is a brass shield shaped sign with screwed on copper or bronze letters D P W underneath, an oval New York State Seal. I assume the initials stand for Department of Public Works. Herman's estate was filled with architectural antiques that came from building located on the grounds of Columbia University. I assume this plaque came o...ff one of the buildings being renovated on the grounds, during or before his time there. It measures app. 7 1/2" x 6" in size. It is a heavy solid sign.
