Antique Brass Pocket Shrine St Joseph Holding Baby Jesus Soldier Civil War Faith
Item History & Price
Reference Number: Avaluer:42955954 | Figure: Jesus |
This is a wonderful little piece Our research indicates that this pocket shrine dates to the Civil War (1861-1865), possibly a bit earlier. It is a tiny 1 inch brass case that pulls apart to reveal a detailed tiny figure of St. Joseph holding a tiny child sized Jesus. These pieces were distributed to soldiers by the US Sanitary Commission during the Civil War. This pieced is small eno...ugh to fit in one's pocket, and brought comfort to the faithful. Chances are it was carried by a soldier in the civil war.
The piece is in good condition for an item over 159 years old. It has some surface patina, some stains, & small split on the brass, but no damage on the figure. The case is just over 1" high, 1/2" deep and about 3/8" deep. The figure is 1 inch high and about 3/8" wide and about 1/4" deep. A very sweet and sentimental religious piece.
This was something I was given by my Grandmother 60 years ago when I was a boy and have kept it all this time. It was recently (11/24/2020) blessed by a Nun of the St. Francis order who is a dear friend of ours.
