Item History & Price
Reference Number: Avaluer:4295755 |
This is a 1971 poster of a map of Bilbo Baggins’ journey as documented in J.R.R.Tolkien’s “The Hobbit”, published by Allen and Unwin in 1971. The art is by longtime Tolkien and Narnia illustrator Pauline Baynes, based on Prof. Tolkien’s designs. The map depicts Hobbiton and the regions of Eriador and Rhovanion through which Bilbo traveled with his companions, the thirteen dwarves led by Thorin Oakenshield. Various detail vignettes adorn the corners of the map: Hobbiton, Moria..., Esgaroth, etc. (these are shown in the accompanying photos.) This poster is mentioned in the Wikipedia article about Pauline Baynes at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pauline_Baynes.
The poster is in excellent condition, and has been rolled and stored for most of its life. There are no tears or foxing, and only very mild surface wrinkling. Though it has never been hung – it has no pinholes or other damage – I must call it “used”. It I reverse-rolled it for a few days before photographing it for this listing, and it now lies very flat. It will remain flat until I package it in a cardboard tube for shipment to some lucky buyer.
I must assume that this poster is very rare, for I have seen only one other offered for sale.
