Up for auction is a nice Polariscope made by Wale Apparatus. It is used but is in excellent working condition. It has a 6" viewport and the bottom lens measures about 5.5". The distance between the lenses can be adjusted with a maximum clearance of about 8.75”. There are some scuffs a...nd scratches but nothing that affects the performance in any way. This is a very useful tool and a must have for every glass studio. It will allow you to see the internal stress in a piece of glass. It will let you know if your annealing schedule needs to be adjusted, if your connections are solid, if two glasses have a compatible c.o.e, if your flame annealing has removed stress from your glass, etc. It can also be used for gemstones or plastics. This is a color polariscope which is a little easier to read compared to than the black and white versions. The top lens can be rotated to allow more or less light through the filters. I prefer to have most of the light blocked but it is easy to adjust to see what works best for you. Although this is a bench model, it can still be moved to your glass even when it is still attached to the lathe. I have attached a few photos to show how it works. One picture is of an annealed rod. Then a photo of the same rod after it has been heated and bench cooled with no annealing cycle. The stress can easily be seen by the color highlights. I also included pics of a scorpion tale which was not annealed and shows quite a bit of stress. The pic of the pendant shows a piece of blue kyanite encased in borosilicate. Even though it was annealed there is still a lot of stress in the glass. These larger models don't show up for sale too often and almost never in such nice condition. Wale Apparatus has a comparable model that is currently $425 on their website. I assume they changed the design because the new square version is cheaper/easier to produce. I have used both models and I prefer this round version because of the larger top viewing lens, more solid cast aluminum build, and two light bulbs instead of one giving more even light distribution. The polariscope will be packed very carefully so it arrives safely. The Polariscope weighs almost 9 lbs all packed up so shipping charges will be a little high on this item due to its weight.
