RARE original XVIII c. Russian Orthodox bronze icon Crucifixes CROSS with CHERUBS
AGE : XVIII century . TECHNIQUE: Made ofbronze. Heavy casting. Decorated with white and blue hot enamels. SIZE : 95 x 157 mm . Weight - 109 gr.
SUBJECT : The shape of theCross is the so called - "eight-pointed', i.e. with three... horizontalbeams: the upper part the "title", the second for the hands and thethird as footboard. The shape of the Cross was adopted from Byzantium, while the inclination of the lowerbeam is a purely Russian development. In Eastern compositions Christ is nailedby four and not by three nails as in Western art. The Savior is pictured deador alive, i.e. with eyes open or closed, depending on the different moments ofthe Passion. In later compositions, the Body takes a slightly curved positionemphasizing, in an abstract manner, Christ's suffering as the Son of Man. The Golgotha on which the Cross is implanted, is a stylizedrock, with the skull of Adam symbolizing the Redemption: Adam sinned - Christredeemed.Onthe top of the Cross is depiction of OurLord - Savaof (God the Father) Inthe halo of Jesus we see three Greek letters which mean "He who is".Two Seraphims hover in theupper beam, their hands covered with cloth as a sign of worship and devotion, flanking the Holy Chost descending over Christ. Betweenthe angels there are old Slavonic letters which say "Angels of the Lord". Belowthe angels, left and right there are two Slavonic words, which mean "King of Glory". ICXC means "Jesus Christ". Theold Slavonic letters on the left and right of Christ's halo means "Jesus Christ Son of God". Theold Slavonic letters that go from left to right under the main bar say: "We venerate Thy Cross O Master and weglorify thy holy resurrection".Theletters K and T to the left and right of Christ stand for the spear and thesponge. Belowthe feet of Christ we see the letters IT and MAPB. They stand for The Mount of Golgopha "and" Theplace of the skull has become Paradise.Underthese letters we find the skull of Adam. HolyTradition teaches that Christ was crucified in exactly the same place as Adamwas buried. Whenthe blood and water poured forth from the side of Christ Adam was sanctifiedand the whole world was given the hope of salvation from Adam until the end ofthe end of time. On the second beamis another two Angels ( Cherubs)Wordsof prayer are on the reverse side of cross .
