This is one of the most intriguing and beautiful of all the McDermitt petrified logs we've cut! The log had begun to decay and was partially hollow before it was petrified, producing this marvel fossil gemstone masterpiece millions of years in the making! It's a true collector quality petrified wood specimen that shows the beauty of this ring porous hardwood even to the naked eye where the cells are visible without magnification.&...nbsp; The structure shows a tree that looks similar to modern black ash and honeylocust, but the details are just obscured enough by decay to make a positive ID difficult (ancient fossilized relatives of both of these tree types are found in this area). The decay the log went through before being petrified produced a porous, antiquated sort of preservation that we still managed to coax a mirror shine from in our rockshop! The base of this log is cut flat so that it stands as shown in the photos without the need for a display stand and the back is cut smooth but unfinished. One of the most beautiful and absolutely unique petrified wood specimens in the shop!This is a really beautiful specimen of the petrified wood found in a desolate sagebrush desert that spans over 100 square miles on the Oregon/Nevada border. It's a slice from a perfectly preserved hardwood, with absolutely gorgeous gem quality agate in warm, natural wood tones preserving this ancient fossil. The exterior is still ash white - colored by the ancient volcanic blast that buried this prehistoric forest. The inside, however, is a richly colored array of gem quality agate that preserved the wood grain beautifully in every detail! The cell structure from the growth rings in this attractive fossil specimen are amazingly well preserved, especially in the lighter colored regions. The rays and cells are distributed in an arrangement consistent with today's black ash and honeylocust trees. The color accents in this fine specimen make it a beautiful as well as scientifically interesting specimen!This excellent log section comes from one of Oregon's premier petrified wood deposits known to collectors the world over. If you don't have a specimen from this area, this would be a dandy to get you acquainted!! It's cut from the center of a nicely shaped log that allows you to see the medullary rays and other cell features with your naked eye (although it takes good eye sight to see fibers that small). This specimen has been carefully polished to show off all the gemmy detail inside. It took a beautiful polish to reveal all of the structure and color of this amazing tree! It's another one of those beautiful fossil treasures that some happy Sticks-in-Stones customer is going to flip over! This round cross section sculpture measures about 9" x 8" in diameter and is cut approx. 1 7/8" thick. Weight is 7.22 lbs. Display stand shown is sold separately.
