BLACKSMITH FORGED
Ca. 1700s - 1800sTHIS IS AN ANTIQUE, BLACKSMITH FORGED AXE OR TOMAHAWK HEAD. AT the latest, I would say it dates from the 1800s, possible the 1700s. It measures approximately 6.5 inches long, the cutting edge is about is about 5.75 inches, and it was made for a round-ish eye VERY approximately 2 inches in diameter. As the photos show it is rusty and pitted. When I got it, there was the remnants of a handle, which I am sure was not original--it was an ill-fitting and very old tree limb secured with a wire nail. I still have it if you want it, although its length (39 inches) will make it expensive to ship.
I bought this near Roxboro, Person County, North Carolina several years ago, and was a clean-out of an old farm. This is an area which has had settled since Colonial times, so this could easily date back to the early 1800s, maybe even the 1700s. It seems a little big to me for a tomahawk, though it could easily be either a war or a trade axe. It could however, also be a simple cutting axe for some early settler or inhabitant.
