They are found off the coast of Tasmania and for over 2600 years up to present day, the Aboriginal Tasmanian women hand-pick every shell to create beautiful necklaces and they keep the tradition alive by teaching their daughters and granddaughters how and when to collect the shells..., how to process them and finally how to make necklaces out of them. . Hundreds of years ago they would trade the necklaces for items to help support their families and that is how their uniquely beautiful necklaces ended up in museums and important collections all over the world! Shell necklace making is the oldest continuing cultural practice in Tasmania and the number of shells to harvest has been steadily dwindling for the last 20 years due to the effects of Global warming and recreational activities on the kelp beds where they grow. This worries the indigenous elders as these shell necklaces are an important part of their culture and heritage. You can read more about this on the Australian Museum website. These necklaces are already rare (I only saw 2 necklaces for sale on eBay Australia), and they are getting rarer every year.
