A rare antique gilded porcelain phrenology bust and inkwell signed on the front “By F Bridges Phrenologist” and dating to the 1850s.
The condition is as photographed, the gilding is good but it has had damage around the neck and a couple of chips that have been filled and repaired in the past.
Would restore well if required.
Frederick Bridges, a renowned English phrenologist was author of the book “Phrenology Made Practical”, which was popular enough to have reache...d several editions. This is one of the rare examples with gilded decoration.
Phrenology, is the study of the shape of the skull which was thought to correlate with specific localised brain functions. It remained popular in Europe and America throughout the 19th century but was shown to be unfounded by Magendie as early as 1843.
