J. Allender Contemporary Gold Coin Counterfeit scale.  This is an original scale likely made between 1851-1853.  There are spaces for gold coins in $1, $2.5, $5, $10 and $20.  Marked with "J. ALLENDER PATENT PENDING".  The counter weight is missing, which is often the case with these scales.  Measures about 8.5" long.
