Item History & Price

Sub-Type: Craniometer | Material: Steel |
A medical device for taking measurements of the human skull. Marked Arthur Trevelyan.Made of a non-magnetic alloy and has 2 brass rings which hold it together. Unusually, it folds down to pocket size.It has an imperial inch scale only. It is nicely engineered. All joints are good and the mechanism is in good working order. The scale is clear and readable. It measures from 4 up to ...8 inches (about 10 to 20cm). I have calibrated it against a steel rule and it is accurate to within about 0.5% which is pretty good considering the age. It does not quite fold completely flat. The metal has a condition consistent with long-term use. The parts which are exposed when the instrument is folded are dull and patinated. The internal surfaces are mirror bright. The brass is darkened. The age is not clear. The use of brass and the absence of a metric scale suggests early 20th century or older. I have found references online to an Arthur Trevelyan who was polymath inventor / composer who lived in the early 19th century. He was (along with other members of the Trevelyan family) active in the Phrenological Association. .
When closed the device measure 5.5 x 1.1 x 0.1 inches. (140 x 28 x 3 mm)
Weighs about 52g (2ozs).
