Antique Hand - Painted Greek Or Russian Orthodox Byzantine Icon Of Saint Anne
Item History & Price

Featured Refinements: Orthodox Icon |
Darkened over time and having a very textured, distressed surface, this is a wonderful portrayal of Saint Anne, the mother of Mary. I'm not sure who the other figure is but I suppose it could be Joachim, her husband. Found at a recent estate auction, the icon was hand-painted in Russia (or Greece?) using tempera paint.
The base material is 1-1/4'' thick wood that measures 11-3/8'' x15" and weighs almost 3 pounds 12 ounces. To display, It can be placed on a stand or hung on the wall with the addition of a wire or a metal hanger mounted on the reverse side.
This wonderful antique icon has an abundance of aged patina with darkening and surface / edge wear as previously mentioned. It appears that over time some editing has been done as whatever the gentleman was holding has been cut out leaving the exposed wood surface. The back side has lots of worm holes on its rough hewn surface. The back also has the writing identifying 'St Anna' on the upper left had side and as I'm no expert, I've taken that as fact.
