(See family history below)This Peter van Rossum 1979 Original Signed Delft Plate is round and Measures 11 1/2" in diameter.Van Rossum, from the Netherlands, set up a Delft studio near Baltimore, Maryland in the 1960's but his ...family and Delft heritage date back to 1821!  The Van Rossum family painted tiles and earthenware in the Netherlands in the famous Rozenburg factory under Colenbrander and F.J. Van Rossum du Chattel. After the factory Rozenburg went out of business, wares and tiles were painted on a small scale in the Netherlands by the Van Rossum family. Peter Van Rossum is a native of Holland with a Master of Fine Arts from The Sarbonne, Paris. He emigrated first to Canada and then to the US. He is not a strict Delft traditionalist and deviated from the common windmills and ships in his presentation, according to one newspaper article from the era. There are several old newspaper articles from the 1970's about Peter van Rossum and his studio/gallery and Delft work in the United States. Ebay does not allow links but you can find this article if you search for him by name. One article, from 1978,   called "Painter Peter Van Rossum...the only 'blue delft'  painter in the United States."
Asheville Citizen-Times Oct. 27, 1978  I was told by a relative that Van Rossum is still "The ONLY Delft Painter to ever live and work in the US!"In another article written by Lawrence Freeny for the  N.Y. Times News Service, Peter van Rossum is quoted as saying, "Delft is a traditional form of tin-glazed pottery, developed early in the 17th century. Delft designs are usually done in a distinctive blue on a white background. I follow my imagination for my designs we never use stencils, and no two designs are exactly alike." Van Rossums great-grandfather, Maarten, began the family ceramic business in The Hague in 1828; at the age of 12;  Van Rossum joined his father in the family enterprise. Formal academic work for van Rossum included a masters degree in art and a Ph.D. from Antwerps Royal Academy of Arts. For six months in 1942 he studied painting in Paris with Pablo Picasso. After the war, van Rossum visited the United States, and decided to move to Baltimore with his wife and seven children. He set up his studio there in 1963.Item Shipped with USPS Priority Mail, double boxed for safety so shipping is a bit higher.
