Of all California porcelain license plates, there is one plate that stands out as perhaps the most distinctive example ever produced - thepre-state California "Mickey Mouse." Issued by the Auto Club ofSouthern California, these plates
could be purchased by members beginning in about 1909. Virtually all known examples have the auto clu...b round emblems at the top, but thisfar rarer variant has these "ears" at the bottom.Only theseal (disc) was issued by the DMV which contained the registration number, andthe motorist must have a license plate made to hang from the rear of thevehicle (front plate also required starting in 1911). That is why the Auto Club got into thebusiness of producing these plates. These plates were valid from the date of issuance until no longer neededfor that car. The seal (disc) that the motorist received from the state withthe registration number, along with the license plate(s), was supposed toremain with the vehicle upon transfer to a new owner, but that did not alwayshappen. Usually these seals wereattached to the wooden firewall.Attached to the back of the plate is a note reading: #40405 issued Nov. 1910 to W. McConnell, 731 Security Bldg, Los Angeles, California. Identification of the original owner of an issued plate is extremely rare. This plate is so rare very few collectors have an example in their collection.
